Out of work for a year or more - GET A JOB NOW
There's a recession going on and you don't have a job - and it's been a year or more. What are you going to do to get one now?
1. Look at what's blocking you?
Do you spend all day thinking, I'm never going to get a job? If you do then that's not going to help. You're focusing on the opposite of what you want. The truth is that you've found a job before, or if you're a first-time job hunter, you're family and friends have. So it's possible. Go with that thought. What's true is not that there are no jobs and I can't find one. What's true is that there are jobs out there and I can get one. Write it down and focus on your new thought.
I spent a lot of time not liking my boss. I thought about it when I woke up. I thought about it when I went to bed. Then I decided to focus on what she did well, her background and why she was the way she was - I saw that she wasn't a bad guy - she was doing the best she could. After a couple of weeks focusing on her in the positive (it was hard at first) she told me she was moving to another role and I was going to be reporting to another person. Weird but true!
2. Connect your butt off
Call everyone you know. Ask them for a friend to talk to. Go online and find all your old school friends. Find new people who have the same hobbies as you or grew up in the same area. Talk to people at the grocery store. Connect and then create a relationship - that means be friends - find things in common, find out how they are doing AND then ask for information - not a job - ask for information about what companies are doing well, what ideas they have for you, for advice.
3. Be creative
Think about getting freelance work instead of a job. It's working for many of my clients. Try and entry-level job in something different rather than the old job. Send emails to people who ARE NOT hiring and see what happens. If you have been sitting at home applying online all day now is the time to do something out of the ordinary.
I saw a guy in England who got a job by walking up and down with a sandwich board advertising he needed a job. And he was a history graduate! Doing the same thing over and over with no result is the definition of insanity. Well maybe it's not that bad but try something new.
Let me know if I can help!
I started talking to a woman in a supermarket last week - we were both grinding coffee. Not only was she also British - like me - but she was also a healthcare recruiter. And she recruited for a lot of the hospitals that my clients work for! You never know who you will run into.
